Uganda Mission Fund

On Tuesday May 3rd, Naomh Ceannais 2nd Year group organised a talk by Fr. Lorcan for our C.S.P.E Action Project. Fr. Lorcan told us all about what school life is like in Uganda, in particular Ngaara. We enjoyed learning about the different culture and climate. The temperaturwe ranged from 26 to 35 degrees and there could be up to 90 children in the classroom. we ;learned that a little money from our pockets would go a long way for those in Uganda. It takes €2 to take care of one child for 3 months. However it would take someone working in Uganda 5 months, working 7 days a week for 10 hours a day to make €2. We found this talk very informative and also an enjoyable learning experience about the country and children we would be helping. We raised €50 as a class group. ( Written by Liga)

Green-Schools Water Flag for Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré

On Wednesday, May 4th, members of the Green Schools Committee attended an Award Ceremony in The Radisson Blu Hotel, Dublin.  At this ceremony, we received our third Green Flag, the Water Flag.

We also received an award for the Best Post-Primary Water School in the Southern Region, as well as a Certificate.  This was a huge achievement for the school and one that we are extremely proud of. The committee worked tirelessly over the past two years, aiming towards this goal.

Some of the things we did in order to achieve this flag were as follows:

  • We travelled to the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Roscrea, to see how water is treated.
  • We  posted weekly ‘Top Tap Tips’ to our school twitter account.
  • We also read the water metre regularly and we installed two water butts.
  • Push taps were installed throughout the school and hippo bags were placed in some of the cisterns, in an effort to use less water with each toilet flush.
  • Any leaks were reported quickly and fixed immediately.

The Green-Schools Committee would like to extend thanks to our past Principal and Deputy Principal, Mr. Gerard O’Brien and Mr. John Haugh, who always supported all of our endeavours.  We would also like to thank our Principal and Deputy Principal, Mr. Michael O’Connor and Mr. Jack Flynn.

This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of all committee members and the support and encouragement of all students and staff in Coláiste Phobal Roscrea.
