“Let’s Learn About Drugs & Alcohol Together”- To launch new website in Borrisokane Community College

MWRDAF & HSE Mid West Drug & Alcohol Service are delighted to announce the launch of an online resource supporting the Post Primary Substance Use Education Project , “Let’s Learn About Drugs & Alcohol Together” Programme. The website is viewed as an integral part of the future development of the LLADAT projects, offering online support to schools, teachers, parents’ and young people across the mid-west.

The “Let’s Learn About Drugs & Alcohol Together” Programme is a Post Primary Substance Use Education Programme designed for delivery to 2nd year pupils and their parents. The programme aims to engage pupils and parents in a shared learning environment, thereby increasing the protection and reducing the risks associated with substance use.

The website launch is taking place on Wednesday 16th November at 1 pm in the Friendship Café, Borrisokane Community College. The website is being launched in conjunction with the 2nd Regional Mid-West Regional Drugs & Alcohol Forum Awareness Week, which runs from the 14th – 18th November 2016.

Borrisokane Community College is the 1st post primary school in North Tipperary to be recognised as a Health Promoting School. The school is also running a Health and Wellbeing week in conjunction with the Drug and Alcohol Awareness week, highlighting the impact of drug and alcohol misuse on health and wellbeing. Borrisokane Community College has been a great support of the LLADAT afterschool programme and we look forward to building on that active partnership as we move forward together.

With hundreds of events taking place in schools, colleges and communities all across the province, we are delighted to visit Borrisokane Community College for our website launch. There will be guest speakers on the day. The website will be officially launched by Dr. Sancha Power, PhD. Dr. Power is Course Leader on the Diploma in Drug and Alcohol Studies in the School of Education at the University of Limerick. She is also a Post-Primary Substance Use Education Worker with the Mid-West Regional Drug and Alcohol Forum (formerly the Regional Drugs Task Force). Dr. Power is responsible for the design, development and implementation of the “Lets Learn about Drugs and Alcohol Together” (LLADAT) post primary projects.

Christmas Market

Preparations are in full swing for the third annual Christmas market. The event will take place in the school on Friday 16th December. It will be open from 3pm – 10pm. Due to its huge success last year Santa’s Grotto is back. Various fun activities are available for our younger visitors including face painting, lantern decoration, story-telling, dress-up and a visit to the Grotto will be available from 4pm until 7pm.

For those who love shopping it’s the chance to browse and enjoy the unique work of local designers, artists, and craftspeople who will be taking part in the school’s celebration of crafts. If shopping just isn’t your thing, think of it as a heaven sent opportunity to buy all your Christmas gifts in a single shopping session! This annual fair will hopefully become an opportunity to showcase local business and student commercial craftwork.  Parents, students and business people will be showing and selling top quality goods. The range is dazzling everything from chocolates to high quality organic skincare products and candles, and because the goods are handmade by craftspeople, they have the added distinction of each one being unique.

Some of the businesses again committed and on board include Sew Darn Pretty, Tierney’s Terryglass, Heenans Hardware, Una’s Flowers, Cais na Tire Cheese, O’ Mahoney’s Candles and students businesses including the LCVP ran coffee shop and a wide range of Christmas confectionery businesses. Students are already busy trialing and testing new products.

Monies raised from the individual stall cost of €30 will be used to fund student support activities in Borrisokane Community College including the finance of the external counsellors in the school which visit for one day weekly.
