Tipperary ETB Student Awards Ceremony 2014

Tipperary Education and Training Board hosted the annual awards ceremony in the Horse & Jockey Hotel, Horse & Jockey, Thurles on Friday, 7th November, 2014 for students who attended the Post Primary schools and Youthreach centres under the remit of the TETB.  This annual event is held to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of the students in our schools and centres. The presentation of the awards is a significant event in the annual calendar.  Students were presented with an award and a certificate for their achievements in the following categories; Best Leaving Certificate, Best Leaving Certificate Applied, Personal Achievement and Sport from the following schools and centres:

  • Borrisokane Community College,
  • Coláiste Chluain Meala, Clonmel;
  • Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn, Clonmel;
  • Coláiste Dun Iascaigh, Cahir;
  • Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed., Thurles;
  • Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré,
  • Comeragh College, Carrick-on-Suir;
  • Nenagh College,
  • Newport College,
  • Scoil Ruáin, Killenaule;
  • St. Ailbe’s, Tipperary Town;
  • Céim Eile, Templemore;
  • Roscrea Education Centre,
  • Youthreach Cappawhite

These awards acknowledge the efforts of students, teachers, schools and centres to achieve continuous improvements and excellence in academic studies and personal development.

Ms. Fionuala McGeever, Chief Executive of Tipperary ETB opened the ceremony by welcoming the Chairperson, Guest Speaker, TETB Committee Members, TETB Staff Members; Principals, Deputy Principals and Staff from the eleven schools, the Youthreach Managers; award recipients, their families and friends.  Ms. McGeever outlined the Agenda for the ceremony.

She introduced the Chairperson of Tipperary ETB, Cllr. John Hogan and invited him to address the audience.   Cllr. Hogan spoke about the importance of education for students to ensure that they receive the best head start for their future careers.   He congratulated all the awardees on their outstanding achievements and wished them well in their chosen paths.

Ms. McGeever then invited the Guest Speaker Mr. Paddy Stapleton to the podium.  Mr. Stapleton gave an overview of his passage through life and education.  He encouraged the students to use their educational opportunities to achieve their goals, to continue to further develop and embrace life without the fear of failure.  He extended his thanks for the invitation to the night’s celebrations and wished the students all best in the future.

Ms. McGeever then invited Cllr. John Hogan, Chairperson to present the awards.

The first presentations of the night were made to the students from Céim Eile, Templemore.  Mr. Michael O’Doherty, Céim Eile Co-Ordinator introduced the following recipients; Louise Neary who received the Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award and Vicki Burke who received the Personal Achievement Award.

The students who were next to be presented with their awards were from Roscrea Education Centre.  Ms. Ester Mackey introduced Helen Donoghue who received the award for Personal Achievement.  Cheyenne Ffitch was nominated for Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award but was unable to attend on the night.

Youthreach Cappawhite; Mr. Ciarán Kennedy, Acting Manager of Youthreach Cappawhite introduced the students from the Cappawhite Centre. The Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award was presented to Sharon Harding.  David Croke was nominated for the Personal Achievement Award but was unable to attend on the night.

Borrisokane Community College; Mr. Matthew Carr, Principal introduced the following students nominated by Borrisokane Community College.  Noelle Murphy was presented with the Best Leaving Certificate Award.  Michaela Finnerty was presented with the Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award.  Ross Daly got the award for Personal Achievement and Paula Hannigan received the Sports Award.

Coláiste Chluain Meala, Clonmel; Their School Principal Mr. Charlie McGeever introduced the students from the Coláiste;   Gerard O’Regan was nominated for the Best Leaving Certificate Award but was unable to attend on the night.  Shane Caulfield received the Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award.  Shannon French was presented with the Award for Personal Achievement and Danah Walsh received the Sports Award.

The next group of students to be presented with their awards were from  Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn in Clonmel. An Muinteoir i bhFeighil Lorna Ní Ghallchobhair introduced the award recipients from the Gaelcholáiste.   Éimhín Ó Loinsingh received two awards – the first award was for the Best Leaving Certificate and the second Award was for Sports.  Sarah Ní Ghibne was presented with the Personal Achievement Award.

Coláiste Dún Iascaigh, Cahir; Ms. Mary Finnegan-Burke, Principal presented the Awards to the following students; Michaela Crosbie Best Leaving Certificate Award. Jessica Rowe received the Personal Achievement Award.  Barry Cooney and Maureen Murphy were presented with the Joint Sports Award.

Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed., Thurles; The Principal, Mr. Denis Quinn introduced the students nominated from Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed., Mary Maxfield Best Leaving Certificate Award.  Mary Ellen McCarthy received the Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award.  Emmet Clarke was presented with the Personal Achievement Award and Gavin Dunne received the Award for Sports.

Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré; Mr. Gerard O’Brien, Principal introduced the Coláiste Phobal students.  Jamie Carroll was presented with the Best Leaving Certificate Award.  Lauren Monahan received the Award for Best Leaving Certificate Applied.  Paul Crampton collected the Personal Achievement Award and Jordan Fogarty was presented with the Sports Award.

Comeragh College, Carrick-on-Suir; Ms. Kathleen O’Donovan Ryan, Deputy Principal announced the students from Comeragh College. Conor Murray received the Award for Best Leaving Certificate.  Lee Roche received the Personal Achievement Award and Michael O’ Loughlin collected the Sports Award.

Nenagh College; Mr. Damien Kennedy, Principal introduced the students from Nenagh College.  Ciara Shanahan Best Leaving Certificate Award.  Jonathan Noonan was nominated for the Personal Achievement Award but was unable to attend on the night.  Lauren Moylan received the Sports Award.

Newport College; Ms. Clodagh Kelly, Principal invited the nominees from Newport College to accept their respective Awards.  Brendan Tormey received the Best Leaving Certificate Award.  April McCarthy was presented with the Award for Best Leaving Certificate Applied.  Aleksandr Tarkojev received the Personal Achievement Award and Liam Bradshaw the Sports Award.

Scoil Ruáin, Killenaule; Mr. Gerry McGill, Principal introduced the students from Scoil Ruáin. Svetlana Novikova and Shane O’Connell received the Joint Best Leaving Certificate Award.  Shane O’ Connell also collected the Personal Achievement Award.  Patrick Hannigan was presented with the Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award.  Micheál Dunne was nominated for the Sports Award but was unable to attend on the night.

The final presentations of the night went to the students from St. Ailbe’s, Tipperary Town; The School Principal, Mr. Peter Creedon introduced the award recipients.  Maeve O’Gorman received the Award for Best Leaving Certificate.  Stephen Butler was nominated for the Best Leaving Certificate Applied Award and Darragh Cusse was nominated for the Personal Achievement Award, both students were unable to attend on the night. Laura Peters received the Sports Award.

Ms. McGeever thanked all for attending this momentous occasion.  She congratulated the students and wished them well for the future.  She thanked the Chairperson Cllr. John Hogan and Guest Speaker Mr. Paddy Stapleton. She further thanked all involved in the organisation of this very successful night.  Ms. McGeever then closed the ceremony and welcomed everyone to join for refreshments.
