Proclamation Day 2016 – Roscrea Education Centre

April 18, 2016

Roscrea Education Centre linked the following events together on Proclomation Day 2016

  • Remember – we did a short education piece regarding the history and importance of the day.  Students were particularly taken by the story of Grace and Joseph Plunkett as it helped to make the history real for them.
  • Reflect – we painted a tree on an inside wall if the centre with an eye symbolising looking back to 1916 and looking forward into the future – we put our handprints on the tree with the year 2016 to mark the present.
  • Re-imagine – we collected relevant items (memory stick with student work and photos, mobile phone, votive candle) and put these into a time capsule with the rolla of the day.  We then put it at the roots of an oak tree that we planted in the centre garden.

Students also participated in two 1916 Art competitions – one run by the TUI (Art pieces were sent away in February and I do not have copies/photos of these) and one run by Sligo Youthreach for all Youthreach centres in the country – see photos attached of our 3D entries.  We also entered 2 poems in that competition.
