Basketball

The Cadet (B) basketball team travelled to Arklow, Wicklow on Monday to take on Dominican College, Wicklow in a qualifier. It was a must win game for the Killenaule girls. The home side started strong and they had the skill and team work to match the bigger physical presence they had over the Killenaule girls. At the end of the first quarter we were down 12-0.

But the Killenaule girls got to grips with the offence and stopped a number of attacks in a row. However they still struggled to get their own scores off and while they battled hard throughout the game the gap from the first quarter was just too wide to close. The game ended 32-12. The girls are now finished for the season so it’s back to the drawing board for next year.

The Senior girls qualified for the South East Semi-finals when they defeated Loreto, Kilkenny 52-16 at home last Friday. The girls played great team basketball from the tip off and controlled the game from start to finish. They face last year’s winners De la Salle, Bagnelstown on November 30th away.

Panel:- Meibh Maher, Sophie Ryan, Grainne Horan, Eimear Lanigan,  Ciara O Sullivan, Katelyn Reilly, Jessica Dowling, Ciara Horan, Caoimhe McMenamin, Lisa Millerick and Alice Browning.

(Lauren Dowling is out with a collar bone break and will miss the Semi-final as well).

Both Cadet girls’ teams are playing this week. The Cadet B team are away to St. Dominic’s of Wicklow in the quarter final of the South East and the second Cadet team are at home in the Semi-final of their league to Scoil Mhuire, Bagnelstown.

Best of luck to both teams.

Hurling – Corn Uí Aonghusa

On Friday, November 18th, our Under 15 hurlers made a successful start to the defence of the Hennessy Cup with a resounding victory over a very disappointing Coláiste Phobal, Roscrea in the quarter final played in The Ragg.

Coláiste Phobal had won their first round match against Coláiste Mhuire, Thurles and we expected a better contest. Scoil Ruáin, however, raced into a six point lead after the first quarter and, despite missing a number of scorable chances, were much superior to the opposition. Points from Kyle Shelly (5) and Eoghan O’Brien (2) were followed by a goal and a point from corner forward, Sean Prendergast with Coláiste Phobal registering just three points in the opening half. Unfortunately for them they missed a penalty in the dying minutes of the half which deflated their players. Jack Hassett completed the first half scoring with a fine point to leave Scoil Ruáin 1-09 to 0-03 ahead at the break.

Goals from the impressive Eoghan O’Brien and Kyle Shelly early in the second half put paid to any chances of a Coláiste Phobal recovery. Scoil Ruáin had the luxury of using all their subs in the course of the second half, with first year, Rian O’Halloran, catching the eye with a goal and a point. The goal came after a fine run and pass from man-of-the-match, Kyle Shelly.

Scoil Ruáin had excellent performances from Robert Gleeson, Patrick Bourke and Eoin Walsh in defence with Thomas O’Brien particularly effective in midfield with very clever play. As mentioned Kyle Shelly and Eoghan O’Brien were the stars of the attack with Louie Doyle and Kyle McNamara getting through a huge amount of work. Sean Prendergast took his scores well as did substitute Rian O’Halloran. The work ethic of the entire team was exemplary.

Football

Our first years took part in a football blitz in Dr Morris Pk last Thursday which was run by the Tipperary Coaching and Games Committee. They played three matches against Colaiste Dun Iascaigh Cahir, Presentation Balingarry and Clonmel High School winning two of the three.  The first years enjoyed the day and are looking forward to the next one.
