Open Evening

Borrisokane Staff and students welcomed all students interested in enrolling in the school for September 2017 on Tuesday 15th November with their parents or guardians for an Open Evening. From 7.30 pm they were able to view all the teaching and learning initiatives being currently used in the school in order to achieve effective learning and ensure that all students reach their full potential. Teachers and students engaged with all the visitors and much praise was bestowed on staff and students alike from many visitors on the warm welcome and enjoyable experiences they had. The principal began the evening by outlining the extra curricular on offer in the school, alongside other extra supports in place to ensure the students are happy and emotionally well throughout their time in Borrisokane Community College. He also outlined upcoming events and courses on offer in the Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert. The head boy, Darragh Buckley and head girl, Rebecca Mulqueen also reflected on their time in the school and spoke honestly of their positive experiences to date. All visitors were then taken around the school in groups by current students and prefects. The range of practical subjects available and the amazing facilities on site for students to use and enjoy where observed by all. Some of the latest rooms recently officially opened including a Friendship café and Library were also included in the tour. Once again it was a hugely successful event. An evening meal and refreshments were also provided in the canteen with compliments after the tours were completed. Enrolments for next year are currently being accepted and deadline for final submission is Friday December 16th 2016.

Birr Castle Earth & Science 1st year trip

Borrisokane Community College introduced an annual Science trip for 1st years this year as part of the new Junior Science curriculum. The Science curriculum in conjunction with the new Junior Cycle programme has changed and now includes an Earth & Science module and encourages integration of technology through the learning experience. In light of this change and to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of Earth Science all 1st year students travelled to Birr Castle on Thursday 10th November.

They visited the Science museum and experienced many areas of Science they had researched since September. They needed to peruse all the displays, engage with the interactive models and watch the video clips to obtain all the answers. Through a fun and interactive worksheet a deeper understanding and appreciation of the planets and universe was achieved. They also had access to the Pavilion where they completed some drawings and prepared movies using their iPads on an aspect of Earth & Science. In teams of no more than three students they had an assignment to complete where they had to create a movie clip or audio based power point on a relevant Earth & Science project. They recorded footage for their Science movie/presentation assignment during the day. They each took part in a guided tour of the castle grounds and museum and a horse and trap ride through the grounds and gardens. It was a highly successful trip and students expressed their great enjoyment of the day.
