On Thursday March 5th, fundraising for our new hurling wall began in earnest.  Bank of Ireland, represented by Liam Sheedy, former Tipperary hurling manager, Jason Forde and Séamus Callanan, current players and John Daly, visited the school.

The bank had agreed to contribute €5 for each new account opened by students during their visit towards the hurling wall. There was great excitement as students queued up to fill in the forms.

After all the completed forms were collected, Liam Sheedy gave a very motivating presentation on the importance of sport and hurling to student life and also, later on, as a means of providing a healthy work/life balance and as a way to build friendships and make contacts. This was followed by a Question and Answer session with Jason and Séamus. Bank of Ireland also sponsored an Apple iPad and the lucky name drawn was fifth year student, Thomas McGrath.

All our players and their trainers and managers are thrilled about this new development and are looking forward to incorporating the wall into training, developing skills and improving techniques.

Fitness Challenge

On Thursday 5th March, Nenagh College brought its Aviva Fitness Challenge to a close with a fantastic workshop hosted by our Sports and Recreation (QQI Level 5) class.  The PLC students coached our second level students in a wide range of exercises, including circuit training and relay races. This was a wonderful conclusion to a fun and fit six weeks, which was kick started by UL personal trainer, Jason Walshe. A special thanks to Mr. Shrahan, Ms. Heffernan, Ms. Carey and Ms. Egan. Well done to all involved!

Afternoon Tea

AfternoonTeaGroupThe 5th year Home Economics students along with their teachers, Ms. Carey and Ms. Tobin, went to the Abbey Court Hotel to experience Afternoon Tea as it is part of their project work for their Leaving Certificate. They were served a variety of treats including cakes, pastries, sandwiches and scones. Through this experience, they investigated the different ways of serving afternoon tea and will recreate what they saw in class. It was a great afternoon. Nenagh College would like to thank the Abbey Court Hotel for their hospitality.

Green Schools

GreenSchoolsWaterForumThe Green School Committee accompanied by their teachers, Mr. Macken and Ms. Carey, recently attended a water forum in Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh. The forum was arranged to kick start our new theme for the Green Flag which is based around the awareness of water usage. We took part in various activities to help develop an action plan for the next two years of work towards the flag. We got ideas from exemplary schools that have already obtained the water flag.  The committee has come away with renewed energy to begin. Now it is up to us to put these plans into action and raise awareness of water issues in the school and wider community. We will keep you informed with regular updates on our progress and hopefully involve the people of Nenagh with the task of water conservation.

Cyberbullying Presentation

sphe_3rdYear2015Garda Sinead Hennessy gave an excellent presentation to all third year students on cyberbullying as part of their SPHE programme.  The students became more aware of the role of technology in their lives and the consequences of misusing it. She was very informative and provided students with guidance and career advice.

CSPE trip

CSPEvisitCollinsBarracks CSPEvisitDublinZooOur CSPE class, accompanied by our teacher Ms Carey, organised a trip to go to Dublin Zoo and Collins Barracks. When our class arrived at the Zoo, we were greeted by one of the workers who took us on a tour. Along the way they explained how they cared for the animals and how animals are mistreated all over the world. We then got to explore the zoo and the animals that live there. Later that day, we went to Collins Barracks and looked at all the items from the war. There was a short play on outside acting out the war which we got to see. We saw army tanks and lots of guns. We really enjoyed our day.
