6 Week Fitness Challenge

SixWeekFitness1 SixWeekFitness2The 6 Week Fitness Challenge got off to a roaring start with students getting involved in a wide range of activities.  On Friday, 30th January, students got to meet with UL fitness guru Jason Walshe who put them through their paces with a master-class in exercise to music. The Sports, Recreation and Exercise PLC group also got to participate in this energetic class. Jason then spoke about his journey through fitness and how important it is. This was well received by the students who are now really motivated for the coming 6 weeks where they will be helped by Ms. Egan, Mr. Shrahan, Ms. Heffernan and Ms. Carey.

Girls’ Soccer – Gold medal success at Nenagh College Futsal Blitz

sppcerOn January 29th Coláiste Mhuire, Thurles, and St. Josephs College, Borrisoleigh, travelled to Nenagh College who hosted a junior soccer blitz for girls.  This blitz was facilitated by James Scott (FAI Referee) and Ms. Beirne (Junior Soccer Manager).  We are very proud of everyone’s performance and most importantly the excellent behaviour of our teams. Congratulations to Nenagh College first years on winning the gold medal in the blitz and to the second year Borrisoleigh team who won silver.  A special word of thanks to our trainer, Megan Coulthard (Nenagh College of Further Education). Training continues each Tuesday at lunch-time in the gym.

Student Council

StudentCouncilRTEvisit2014 StudentCouncilRTEvisit2014BillyDonnellanThe Student Council were worthy recipients of a trip to RTE as a result of their activities and work effort in the school.  They visited RTE studios where they had an opportunity to present a weather forecast.  Following this they visited the 2FM studios and got to see first-hand how a radio show is produced and delivered.  They had a fantastic day and toured all of RTE and got the chance to meet some stars!  They were taken on their trip by Student Council Co-ordinator, Ms. Madden, and Ms. Ní Chofaigh who organised the trip for them.

Media Studies

On Monday 19th of January both TY Media groups attended Nenagh Ormonde Cinema with their teacher, Ms. Hanlon, and kindly accompanied by Mr. Cox. We went to see Taken 3 starring Liam Neeson.  Liam Neeson is a well-known Irish actor and has starred in many famous Hollywood movies e.g. Star Wars, Schindlers List and Taken 1 and 2.  As part of the transition year media module students are required to compile a powerpoint presentation on their favourite Irish actor/actress and Liam Neeson always tops the list.  It was a very enjoyable afternoon at the movies with plenty of positive discussion about the plot and future plots if there were to be a Taken 4.  Many thanks to Helen who opened the cinema especially for the afternoon for us.

History and Art

2015-02_06_CollinsBarracksphotoOn the 30th of January the 5th year Art class, along with the History class, from Nenagh College took a trip to Dublin to visit the National Gallery of Ireland, the National Museum of Ireland and Collins Barracks.  Students were accompanied by their Art and History teachers, Ms. Beirne and Mr.Cox.  At 7:30am the class departed from Nenagh train station and arrived in Dublin at 10:00am.  The class then took the Luas to Abbey Street and walked to the National Art Gallery.  The class was split into two groups to be given separate tours of the gallery.  Each group got to see the paintings ‘A Family’ by Louis Le Brocquy, a still life by Picasso and many other works of art.  Each group then went to the Lines of Vision exhibition, where the works of Jack Yeats and Caravaggio were on display.

The class then visited the National Museum of Ireland where everyone got to see the beautiful Ardagh Chalice, Derrynaflan Chalice and the Tara Broach. The group also learned more about the Beaker people, and the early Bronze Age.

On behalf of Ms. Beirne and Mr. Cox, we would like to thank all who travelled on this trip on Friday for their impeccable behaviour, and we hope they enjoyed the experience.
