The “Junk Kouture” Challenge

March 5, 2015

The Transition year students of Comeragh College have taken on the “Junk Kouture” challenge. “Junk Kouture is a national competition for second level students where teenagers create high-end wearable fashion from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin”.

Junk Kouture aims to inspire and ignite passion in these teenagers while at the same time educating them about the importance of recycling and reusing waste, empowering them with the confidence to be creative.  Over the last few months the students have been collecting all sorts of rubbish, manipulating materials, looking at the possibilities of these, problem solving, overcoming difficulties and developing ideas for their final designs.

Climate change was the initial starting point and lead students in many different directions.  Six outfits were created during this process and  students will never see rubbish in the same way again.

In the last few weeks our students dressed up in their creations, strutted their stuff around the school and headed in the direction of the tree park in Carrick on Suir. All seemed to revel in the attention and turned many heads.

Two outfits from Comeragh College were successful in achieving a semi final place. Over 900 entries from schools around the island of Ireland entered the competition. The semi final takes place on the 13th March in the University Concert Hall in the University of Limerick. Our successful teams are “Moss Man” by Jimmy Russell, Jamie Houlihan and Adam Nugent and “Solar Corona “by Jack Hickey and Elizabeth Moloney. Let’s hope they make it to the final which takes place in the 3 Arena in Dublin.  Best of Luck to all involved.
