As part of Positive Mental Health Awareness Week which took place from the 9th to 15th October, 2016; Tipperary ETB organised a Fit To Learn Week in the Gym of the former Army Barracks Clonmel. Workshops were open to all staff, tutors and learners.
Monday morning began with a Mindfulness workshop facilitated by the talented Dee Brady, where there was a great attendance.
Tuesday focused on a Yoga session, with breathing exercises and stretching guided by the experienced Finola O Sullivan .
Gabriela Kozlowska and James Bowers from the Sports, Recreation and Exercise Course gave a fabulous , fit-inducing” Boot camp for the Brave” on Wednesday 12 October. Gabriela and James are near to completing their Major Award in Sports, Recreation and Exercise which is part of the Back to Education Initiative’s suite of courses and is located in the former Barracks on Dillon Street. We are continuing the Boot camp every lunchtime from 1.10 pm to 1.50 pm Monday to Friday and also from 9.30 am to 10.30 am on Monday to Wednesday.
Linda McCormack kept the group on their toes on Thursday with a Zumba and a Line Dancing session which was great fun.
Our final day focused on a Healthy Eating and Minding ourselves. Richard Kennedy (Fitness Freak) turned our Gym into a healthy food workshop. Over 70 people turned up for an energising walk around the block, organised by TETB Adult Learning Scheme, before Richard (Fitness Freak) gave a short presentation on the menu and how to prepare his simple, healthy recipes. The food was prepared by the students using fresh fruit and vegetables from Martins Shop. It was served by the students who deserve great credit along with their tutors Ann Marie Sweeney and Marie Clancy. Exercise and eating well are important contributors to good mental health and this message was heard loud and clear during our Fit To Learn Week..
The week was a huge success with over 200 people attending. On behalf of Tipperary Education & Training Board. Thank You All.
