Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition

Coláiste Phobal Ros Cré is very proud to have four Transition Year students gain entry to the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition. These four entrepreneurs have been chosen from a large volume of entries to go forward to the next stage of the competition.

This next stage will involve a 20 minute interview based on their video application. The students will be interviewed by representatives from Irish Angus Producer Group, ABP Food Group, Kepak Group and an Agricultural Science Teacher.

Should they be successful in this interview they will go forward to the exhibition in Croke Park on the 16th March 2016 at which the final 5 schools will be selected to win the Angus calves. The four students are Neil Maher, Jack Bourke, Jake Delaney, Roddy Teehan. We at Coláiste Phobal are very proud of these four young men and wish them every success in their endeavour.

Badminton

On Wednesday 20th of January the county badminton championship took place in Our Lady’s Templemore. Colaiste Phobal Ros Cre was well represented with six teams in total taking part, three u16 and three u19. In the u16 section there were four groups of four with all teams playing three matches each and the top team in each group going forward to a semi-final, unfortunately none of the Colaiste teams made it through with two of the three narrowly missing out on top spot in their group. Team A: Aaron Loughnane, Luke Seacy, Cian Dwan, Luke O’Donnell. Team B: James Whyte, Dean Pyne, Jack Kirwan, Ben Higgins. Team C: Bradley Neville, Tomas Teehan, James Dooley.

The U19 had just one section with all teams playing each other and the top two meeting in the final. This time around the Colaiste were successful with two of the three teams finishing first and second in the group and meeting in the final. In an all ros cre final it was A v B, with all players knowing each others game inside out matches were tight but the B team could not do enough with Jack Finnegan sealing victory for the first team in the last singles match up and also securing a place in the Munster finals a week later. Team A: Andrew Cullen, William Cummins, Evan Hassett, Jack Finnegan. Team B: Cian Cordial, Steven Tierney, Aaron Moloney, Daniel Coonan. Team C: Ruairi Murphy, Saqlain Sadiq, Vincent Kennedy.

Trip to the Waste Water Treatment Plant by The Green-Schools Committee

On Wednesday last, January 27th 2016, our Green-School’s Committee, along with Ms. Mullen and Ms. Cullen, went on a trip to the Waste Water Treatment Plant in Roscrea.  We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, which was very interesting and informative.  We learned all about the filtration of water and the steps taken to get water from the source to our taps!

We would like to thank Tommy Delaney for organising the tour for us and Jimmy Cahill, Pat O’Donoghue and Ger Raferty for showing us around the plant and for explaining everything in such great detail.

It gave us all a better understanding and a greater appreciation of the time and energy that it takes to ensure our water is clean and safe to drink when we turn on our tap each day.  It also made us realise that water is a precious resource, which should not be wasted.
