ENTERPRISE COMPETITION:

We wish all our 1st year students the very best as they prepare for The Student Enterprise competition that takes place in L.I.T. Thurles. Under the guidance of Ms. Bergin three teams of students have been working diligently on mini-companies. Included among those are Gary Delaney & Joseph O’Donoghue (Mini-hurleys), Aaron Croke & Oskar Lipinski (Polish Pastries), and Katelyn Ryan & Katelyn O’Gorman (Recycle Creations). The standard of entries promises to be very high as this is the first year the Enterprise Competition involves schools from throughout Tipperary in an All-County competition. Go néirí leo go léir.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL:

Our under-14 girls volleyball team played three competitive matches last week in The Dome against colleges from Portlaoise, Fethard, and Dungarvan. These matches transpired to be well contested, exciting, and gritty affairs with very few scores seperating either side at any stage. Some superb performances were produced throughout from our players with Claire McGrath, Zoe McKenna, and Madison Pitout in particular excelling. Our series of matches concluded with one win, one draw, and one defeat. Following on from this will be participating in the Shield competition with group stages commencing over forthcoming weeks. The panel representing Coláiste Mhuire on the were: Áine Flynn, Chloe Hall, Zoe McKenna, Claire McGrath, Katelyn Ryan, Katelyn O’Gorman, Chloe McCarthy, and Madison Pitout.

FAIRTRADE GUEST SPEAKER:

A group of second year students paid a visit to L.I.T. Thurles last Wednesday to hear first hand accounts of the benefits of Fairtrade purchasing of goods in our shops. This event featured Stephen Best, a banana farmer from The Caribbean who enlightened our cohort of students with a most informative talk on farming cash crops and eking out a meagre existence while being subject to MNC’s and market fluctuations for commodities. He contrasted this with the opportunities now afforded to him with the Fairtrade movement while also emphasising that Fairtrade was ‘Trade not Aid’.

HURLING:

Our under-15 hurling squad made the trip to Ballylooby during the week to take on Fermoy College in a well fought and skillful contest that was played in conditions that were conducive to hurling. Both sides approached the early stages of this contest tentatively but after a couple of fortuitous goals by the opposition Coláiste Mhuire were under pressure to close the deficit. Aaron Delaney and David Manning were outstanding for us and kept us in touch with some well taken scores. Ultimately however, we failed to capitalise on some good chances, and succumbed to a better team on the day. Beidh laethanta eile!

BODHRÁN WORKSHOP:

Students from 1st year were treated to a Bodhrán workshop last Friday in our library area as part of Seachtain Na Gaeilge a bhí á reachtáil ag Roinn na Gaeilge sa scoil. Bodhrán player and maker from Nenagh Seán Geaney demonstrated bodhrán techniques to various dance beats ie. jigs, reels, hornpipes, marches, and slides. Students also joined in with Seán in learning the craft of Bodhán making. Feedback from our students who partook in this workshop was most positive and the experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
