Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed Thurles Notes 30-01-2015

February 2, 2015

GAELIC FOOTBALL: Our u-15 squad travelled to ballinahinch last Tuesday to play Newport College in what transpired to be an exciting and competitive game of football. Conditions on the day were not the most conducive as the elements mitigated against both sides in their endeavours to play fluid passing movements. Despite this, both sides delivered an enthralling contest that could have went either way, but thankfully at the final whistle, Coláiste Mhuire finished strongly to triumph on a scoreline of 4-06 to 1-08. Best on the day for us were Shane Ryan, Brian O Halloran, Bill Hogan, and Aaron Delaney (2-02), Jack O’Riordan (1-00), Liam Ryan (1-02), Shane Stapleton (0-01), Aaron Maher (0-01).

ETB TABLE QUIZ: Well done to our quiz teams that competed in The ETB Schools quiz that was held last Tuesday at The Dome in Coláiste Mhuire. The standard on the day in this event was very high as we pitted ourselves against the very best of Tipperary ETB student teams from around the county.  Unfortunately, while performing admirably and scoring high in the overall marking, we finished just outside the medals. Our teams comprised of Aaron Hassett, Lara Unger, Gavin Dunne, David Manning, and Christine Elphick, Eleanora Micozzi, Pia Kolb, and Bríd Gleeson.

THE MERCHANT OF VENICE: Last Thursday, our 3rd year English class students were treated to an excellent production of The Merchant Of Venice that was held at The Source Theatre in Thurles. Feedback was most positive and students found it extremely helpful as they study for their mock exams which will take place over the next couple of weeks.

BASKETBALL: Two panels of basketball teams from 1st and 2nd year represented our school proudly as they travelled to The Sarsfield Centre last Thursday to play in the 1st round of The Midlands Cup when they faced two formidable sides from Tullamore College, Offaly. Training had been going very well and there was a strong degree of optimism as both teams took to the arena. Our 1st year team defeated the opposition on a resounding and comprehensive 25-04 scoreline. Outstanding for us in this contest were Oscar Lipinski, Evan Donnelly, Ben O’Sullivan, and Éamon Ryan. The second match transpired to be a closer and more tentative affair as only one basket seperated the sides at the final whistle. Fortunately, Coláiste Mhuire were also victors here as they clinched a narrow 16-14 win. Excellent performances in this match came from Jack Lawlor, Arnold Arlauskis, Dylan Molumby, and Shane Ryan. Well done also to the management of Ms. Trisha Hickey and Ms. Julie Delaney.

COFFEE MORNING/BAKE SALE: Well done to our 5th & 6th year LCA students who organised a most successful coffee morning last Friday in our assembly area. All proceeds from this coffee morning are going to the Irish Pilgrimage Trust. This organisation is giving one of our most popular students Johnny McInerney funding for a trip to Lourdes this Easter. A huge thanks to everyone who supported this event.

GIRLS FUTSAL: A girls’ futsal blitz was held for our 1st and 2nd year students last Thursday as they ventured off to Nenagh to play against Nenagh College A, Nenagh College B, and St. Josephs’ College Borrisileigh A and B teams. This was our first outing in Futsal and while no silverware was won, the experience will stand to our girls in forthcoming competitions. Excellent performances were displayed by Katelyn Ryan, Claire McGrath, Katelyn O’Gorman, Chloe Hall, Zoe McKenna, and Áine Flynn. Beidh laethanta eile, maith sibh go léir!
