Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed Thurles Notes 27-02-2015

February 27, 2015

MAKE A BOOK:

Last Thursday our 1st year students ventured off to Cork City Hall to display a book they had been working diligently on for the last few months as part of their JCSP Programme. The book was entitled ‘Secondary school, then and now’ and involved a compilation of interviews with grandparents pertaining to their experiences at national school going back over fifty years in some cases. Students also included an individual piece on their own contemporary experiences of education to contrast with their grandparents first hand accounts of schooling in the hinterland schools of Thurles. Their book was highly commended and praised as a most comprehensive and valuable researched piece of work on educational and social history in mid-twentieth century Ireland. Another highlight of the day saw our first years and accompanying teachers pay a well earned visit to The Mahon Point Shopping Centre!

VOLLEYBALL:

The under-14 boys volleyball team are training hard and being put through their paces under coach Ms. Wall as they prepare for upcoming competition in this age group. In last years’ corresponding competition we reached the All-Ireland semi-final of The Shield, and our players are optimistic as they commence the group stages over the coming weeks.

VOYAGE SCOLAIRE EN FRANCE!:

Excitement is palpable presently among our 1st and 2nd year students as they prepare to travel to France as part of this year’s school tour. This trip promises to be most entertaining with itineraries meticulously planned by accompanying teachers who no doubt will be visiting the famous sights of Europe’s most visited city. ‘Attendant avec impatience!’

LISHEEN MINES:

As part of of The Schools’ Business Partnership Programme, Lisheen Mines and Eleanor Walsh of The School Business Partnership paid a visit to Coláiste Mhuire last Tuesday. This involved liaising with our fifth year cohort of students and undertaking mock interviews and C.V. preparations with them. This was the second last visit-in from Lisheen Mines for this academic year. In recent years our fifth year student groups have found visits to Lisheen Mines, viewing of operations at surface & sub-surface levels, mock interviews and C.V. preparations to be most invaluable and beneficial in career choice making, and in preparing for the world of work after second level education.

CYBER BULLYING TALK:

Our first year students were paid a visit last week by our local community Garda who delivered a talk to them on the topic of cyber bullying. This pre-arranged session was informative and educational with students most receptive to it. A short film was included and feedback from all involved was very positive.

MOCKS COMPLETED:

Our Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate students completed their mock exams last week and are presently awaiting their results. Guímis gach rath orthu agus go néirí go geal leo go léir as seo amach!
