Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed Thurles Notes 16/01/2015

January 16, 2015

GREEN FLAG COMPETITION: Our ever diligent Green Schools committee are busy presently in launching a motto competition to represent our quest to attain a second Green Flag on energy at Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed. Huge strides have been made in recent years to make our school a greener and cleaner environment. This has resulted in both staff and students alike becoming increasing aware of the importance of recycling and of disposing carefully of waste. It has also culminated in the awarding of our first Green Flag by An Taisce last Summer. Competition promises to be intense as students produced superb slogans & mottos in last years competition.

STUDENTS COUNCIL: The Students Council contribution to school life was recognised at a ceremony on Thursday last week in our assembly area during Friendship Week. The members were presented with their  Student Council badges by the facilitators Ms. Cahill and Ms. Delaney who congratulated all the participants and thanked them for their contribution in making Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed a better environment. Listed among recent achievements by the Students Council at the ceremony were the installation of outdoor water faucets and locker shelving for students.

LE CHÉILE TEAM: Our 6th year Le Chéile team were similarly recognised for their contribution in working with our cohort of students from 1st year. The transition of progressing from primary to secondary school can be a daunting experience for any student but with the assistance of senior students on the Le Chéile team this transition is made easier. Each Le Chéile member is assigned a group of 1st year students who they work with and address any arising concerns or issues of note. Congratulations to the Le Chéile team and on the presentation to them of their well deserved individual awards.

FRIENDSHIP WEEK: Last Friday saw the conclusion of a very successful Friendship Week at our school. Feedback from students was most positive as it pertained to emphasising the reinforcement of positive behaviour and alerting students to the dangers of bullying behaviour. On Thursday, students partook in a whole day event “Humour Fit” that saw artistic director Michael O’Sullivan stage a dramatic one man show that dealt with subject matters that affect the lives of young people.

ACTIVE FLAG: The pounds are being shed as staff and students are undertaking our own Operation Transformation here at Coláiste Mhuire. Many activities are taking place, such as lunchtime designated walks eg. The Jimmy Doyle route 2.6km. and the Lidl route 2.2 km.! Many thanks also to Mary Ryan Maher and her team of nurses on carrying out blood pressure checks over the last couple of weeks in our school as part of The Active Flag Intiative.
