SCI-FEST CHAMPIONS: Congratulations to 5th year students Lara Unger and Eleanora Micozzi on winning 1st prize in the Technology Project Category at The Sci-Fest held recently at Thurles LIT. Their project was based on focusing Wi-Fi signal using a parabolic reflector and made a huge impression on the judging panel. Both Lara and Eleanora intend taking their project to the next level now as they endeavour to commercialise their reflectors. Congratulations also goes to our second group of Pia Kolb, Julia Letz, and Anna Zuazua with their project entitled ‘The Ratio of Attraction’. This was highly complimented by the judges as an excellent and brilliantly researched piece of work. Both groups also impressed the judges with their communication skills and in-depth knowledge in their fields of study. A special word of praise must also go to their science teacher Ms. Maggie Smith whose diligence and mentoring of both groups from early in the academic year has culminated in prestigious awards being won at Sci-Fest, and also previously at the BT Young Scientist exhibition.

PLC ART TRIP TO MADRID: The PLC Art class recently returned from a most educational and enjoyable trip to Madrid, one of Europe’s most amazing cities for Art & culture. Among the famous museums and sights seen were The Reina Sofia Art Gallery and the world famous Prado Museum. Una experiencia maravillosa!!!

ROBOTS RUBIX & BAXTER!: Robots ‘Rubix’ and ‘Baxter’ made the journey last week to the Radisson Blu hotel in Galway as part of the EA Sports sponsored Sumo Robot Boxing competition for second level schools. The Transition Year Engineering class had been working diligently under the guidance of teacher Mr. Fanning in recent months to produce both robots. Students were delighted to be afforded the opportunity to display their impressive works at this showpiece alongside the top Engineering schools in Ireland.

DARREN O’SULLIVAN: As part of The Active Schools Initiative, students of Coláiste Mhuire were treated recently to a visit from Kerry footballer and former All-Ireland winning captain Darran O’Sullivan. Darran is representing Sky Sports in running activities in schools. He was emphasising the use of sport in promoting leadership and motivation levels in young people.
