Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed Thurles Notes 06-02-2015

GREEN SCHOOLS SLOGAN:

After a huge number of entries for our school slogan competition, the committee have finally chosen a winning slogan. “Kill-a-Watt-Be a bright spark” was the entry from James Hackett in 6th year. The Green schools committee have also been involved with the Neat Streets Programme and have been busy uploading pictures to Instagram to promote picking up litter in our school.

GAA FORUM:

A number of Transition year students took part in a GAA Forum that was held recently at The Dome in Coláiste Mhuire. This was an opportunity for Transition year students representing schools from Thurles and surrounding areas to engage in discussion pertaining to Gaelic Games, their importance in society, how they can be improved, marketing etc.. This was organised by The Tipperary County Board whose representatives on the day included Dinny Maher, Andy Ryan, and John O’Keefe. Feedback from our students was most positive, especially from our non-national E.F. (Education First) cohort from such places as Spain, Austria, Germany, and Italy, who have really embraced GAA games since being exposed to them on arrival here last September, and are frequent visitors to matches in Semple Stadium!

BASKETBALL:

Following on from the success of our recent victory in under-14 basketball against Tullamore College in the Midlands Cup, we faced formidable opposition in the form of St. Conleth’s College at Newbridge. This transpired to be a most competitive encounter between two very evenly matched teams that exemplified some superb skills and indeed for the majority of the match only one basket seperated the sides. As the hooter sounded at the finish, the Newbridge side proved triumphant on a scoreline of 17-14. Best for us on the day were Oscar Lipinski, Jack Kehoe, Éamon Ryan, Gary Delaney, and Evan Donnelly. Fortunately, victory in our next two matches will see us progress on to the next stage of this competition.

GAELIC FOOTBALL:

Last Thursday we played an under-15 Gaelic Football match against Thurles C.B.S. in our own grounds. This was an entertaining game of football and after a tentative start, CBS settled into their stride very early, notching up some well taken scores. The second half was to prove more promising as we outscored the opposition, and while outstanding performances were displayed by David Manning, Aaron Delaney, Aaron Maher, Shane Ryan, and Gary Delaney, we ultimately succumbed to a better team on the day.

MOCK EXAMS:

We wish all our Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students the very best of luck as they sit their mock exams this week. Go néirí go geal leo uile!
