SciFest Winner

Congratulations to Lorcan Tuohy-Donnelly from Borrisokane Community College on winning the excellence in STEM award at the national SciFest final in Marino College, Dublin on Friday the 6th of November.

Lorcan qualified to go through to this stage when he won the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) award at the LIT SciFest competition held In LIT Thurles early in 2015.

Lorcan’s project “It’s An Ill Wind That Blows No Good” investigated the overall effect of wind speed and blade length on the power produced by wind turbines.

Lorcan discovered that when wind reaches a certain speed level the maximum energy is produced. Any speeds greater than this do not produce any extra energy. In addition, he hypothesised about the impact of blade length on the efficacy of the turbine. As Lorcan developed his research he was able to verify his results mathematically using “Betz’s Law” which defines the power co-efficient of a wind turbine.
