Parent Teacher Meeting and Ipad Presentation:

The 2nd year and 5th year parent teacher meeting was held in the school last week. This received a positive response from parents. Teachers provided support and advice to parents with regard to their child’s progress. After the meeting all 1st year and 2nd year parents were invited to attend an information evening on Ipad use. The Deputy Principal presented on Cyberbullying and the dangers of social media sites. Parents were advised to be aware of the importance of internet safety. Relevant web links to keep them up to date on new apps and better informed were given. The Principal demonstrated ways to manage the use of the Ipads. An interactive session was held and questions were answered.  If parents have any issues in relation to IPad usage they are welcome to contact the school and assistance will be provided.

Internet Safety Day.

Internet safety day takes place nationwide on Tuesday 10th Feb 2015. Borrisokane Community College teachers will show a power point on ‘Cyberbullyling and Internet Safety’ to all 1st and 2nd year students on the day. They will show relevant you tube clips; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=599I1E-rWTU highlighting how dangerous it is to post personal information on line. Caught in the Web, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgCNGvL0g1g  covers all aspects of internet use. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7pYHN9iC9I is an ad for the bank outlining the extensive information some people post online and one humorous way it can be abused.!. The students will also partake in poster competitions and SID (Safe Internet Day) armbands and badges will be distributed to the students. It is important that students are continuously educated on the negative side of the Internet and Social media in a society advancing rapidly in technology.

Autism Centre:

Students of the centre continue to enjoy their weekly swimming trip. Other fun activities are being planned for next term. The centre continues to deliver an enjoyable student centred and inclusive education. A former student of Borrisokane Community College will complete work experience form UL shortly in the centre helping students with art and craft activities.

Work Experience:

Transition year students complete their work experience this week. Teachers will visit the various locations to gain an insight into the work being completed by each student. This proves a valuable experience for all students in a year that is recognised as an opportunity to mature and gain in self-confidence. 5th year LCVP students are also on work experience for part of this week. We thank all employers for providing this valuable experience to our students.

Sympathy:

The school community was deeply saddened by the passing of Bernie Mc Ginn (Roscrea) this week, mother of Construction Studies teacher Mr. Mark Mc Ginn.  Unfortunately she lost her battle with cancer and leaves behind her loving husband Aiden, and family, sons Mark, Damien and daughter Ciara. ‘Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear’. May she rest in peace.

Basketball:

Congratulations to the first year basketball team on winning their game last week.  They will now proceed to the next stage of the competition.
