On Friday 12th December 2014, the Applied Social Studies PLC class at Nenagh College hosted an Intercultural Day. It was a very exciting event that featured foods and artefacts from Ireland and the many different nationalities that are living in Ireland today. We wish to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to all the people who attended and gave a donation and to the local shops and businesses who generously provided prizes and vouchers for the day- all of which were raffled off. The proceeds of the day will be going to the Unicef Children’s Charity.

Shakespeare Sessions for Leaving Certificate

Our Leaving Certificate Higher Level English students travelled to the Lime Tree Theatre, Limerick on Monday 19th to attend a staging of Shakespeare’s “Othello” by Cyclone Rep Theatre Company.  It was a student-centred performance which involved a review of the main themes and gave the students opportunities to get involved in discussions and participate. This will serve as an excellent aid to our students as they prepare for the upcoming mock examinations starting on February 5th.

Butlers Chocolate Experience

ButlersChocolateVisitDec2014Second and fifth year Home Economic students of Nenagh College went on their annual visit to Butlers Chocolate Factory, Dublin on Thursday 11th December along with their teachers Ms. Tobin and Ms. Carey.

The visit began with everyone getting some chocolate while watching a short film on the history of chocolate and the history of Butlers.  From there we entered the Butlers Chocolate Museum where more chocolate was consumed.  The students were given a questionnaire and had to walk around the museum reading the information to find all the answers.

Everyone got to stand in the gallery above the factory floor and see Butlers chocolate being made, from the tempering of the chocolate to the packaging.  The students found the whole experience of making chocolate very interesting and were especially surprised that they were in the process of making and packaging Easter eggs.

The highlight of the visit was definitely the Experience Room where everyone enjoyed a hot chocolate and saw demonstrations of how chocolates are made and filled.  They were then given the opportunity to decorate their own chocolate novelty reindeer which was then packaged and brought home as a souvenir.

The day was thoroughly enjoyable and was a great experience for all students.  It also helped the fifth year students with an investigation they will have to do into an Irish Food Industry.

It has become a trip that every Home Economics student looks forward to.

School Fitness Challenge

Nenagh College are participating in the Aviva six week Fitness Challenge. It is going to begin with a bleep test on Monday, where we will assess students’ initial fitness levels. At the end of six weeks, after fitness training and an awareness of healthy eating, students will be retested. This will be compared with their original bleep test to see how much they have improved. Our aim at Nenagh College is to be named Aviva’s most improved fittest school. Students will be guided by Ms. Carey, Ms. Egan and Ms. Heffernan.
